Leah. 18 years old. We used to live in Paris, then moved to Poland. Now I’ve been living here for more than five years and I understand: Poland has become home for me not because I was born here, but because each of its cities is like a new frame in a film in which I am a director and an actress at the same time.
I remember how it all started. I was twelve when my mother and father and I moved to Warsaw. Paris was for me the familiar smell of a baguette at dawn and endless sidewalks where you could get lost and find yourself again. Warsaw greeted me with a cold street and enormous, almost industrial beauty. I learned again - both the language and myself. Polish made conversation with me not only at school, but also on the streets, where children speak so quickly that you catch words bit by bit and put them together into your own meaning.
Now that I’m 18, I see: I grew up between two cultures, and this gave me freedom - because I can listen to people in Polish, but in my soul I can retain the warmth of the French soul. My mother and I sometimes laugh at how Poland teaches you to keep up with the times: on the one hand there are old brick houses and narrow streets, on the other…
